Algorithmic Bias and Invisible Decisions

Algorithms are not neutral. They are shaped by the data they are trained on and the objectives they are coded to optimize. If a system is trained on biased historical data—say, underrepresenting certain demographics—it will reproduce that bias in its recommendations.

Moreover, the decision-making logic of these systems is often opaque. Even engineers cannot always explain why a particular result was shown. This lack of transparency means that digital platforms can exert enormous influence without accountability. In this model, freedom of choice becomes a managed illusion—dependent on unseen logic and corporate priorities.
